Children have an innate ability to acquire multiple languages Children are curious, and able to imitate sounds perfectly. They are open-minded, and unlike adolescents, they are not self-conscious about making new sounds. They are not concerned about appearing silly while participating actively. This natural ability diminishes with age. In fact, children enrolled in foreign language programs score statistically higher on standardized tests conducted in English. A number of reports have demonstrated that children who have learned a second language earn higher SAT scores, particularly on the verbal section of the test. One study showed that by the fifth year of an immersion program, students outperform all comparison groups and remain high academic achievers throughout their schooling. Most importantly, Estrellitas will encourage your child's interest in the language and in other cultures. You as a parent can show him/her that you value the ability to speak a second language. First, by participating in this program and later by attending cultural events that feature music, dance, or food from countries where Spanish is spoken. Also, you can provide some books, videos, or other materials in Spanish. Children already exposed to Spanish A child who is already exposed to some Spanish in the house or through relatives, has a tremendous opportunity to solidify such skill at an early age at Estrellitas. Plenty of research shows that the earlier children are exposed to foreign languages the better. When children are exposed at an early age they are more likely to speak as a native speaker in the language. If you are familiar with the language yourself, read to him/her. |
