At Estrellitas, children are immersed in Spanish as they have fun. They sing, dance, paint, play basic percusion instruments and participate in activities that spark their interest as they are exposed to Spanish--just as they are in their mother tongue. Teachers play with the 3 to 6 year-olds games that entice them to participate as they use the vocabulary they are learning. "I play with friends...números, colores and dominós" claims a happy 3 year old.
Teachers work with the 6 to 9 year-olds on their reading and writing of Spanish--in a fun and challeging way. "¿Que es esto?" asked the teacher. "un triángulo" responds an 8 year old girl. Then they went on and gave examples of things shaped like triangles...in Spanish, off course. "My child speaks Spanish now" said her proud mother. She is very encouraged to help her daughter with the CDs filled with activities and material to print that she received as part of the Estrellitas package.
We invite musicians that bring music from Larin America and Spain to class. Above, you see two musicians playing music from the Andean region of South America. The children loved it, they played the percusion instruments the musicians brought for them and danced to the tunes. They learned where these instruments come from and what natural materials are used to make them. "Wow, como viento y pájaros" or "sounds like the wind and birds" said a girl. Music from Latin America draws anybody to dance, specially children. As the children have fun, the lyrics and what is said--in Spanish--is easily grasped by them. The acquisiton of Spanish--a second language for many, comes natural.
